My first wife was born in Germany and her father was in the German Army during World War II; whereas, my father was in the U.S. Army during World War II. I was a bit nervous meeting for the first time the person who I knew was going to become my father-in-law. As we were making small talk, for some unknown reason I mentioned that my father had been in Germany. Perhaps, I was trying to create a bit of a bond between the two families. I was mortified, when upon hearing that my father had been in Germany, my future father-in-law simply said, "When?"
